Our one-year program has two fields students can choose according to their interests and future plans:

• Music Therapy Field: Includes six academic courses integrated with three practicum courses. You will be placed in an off-campus facility one day per week and during a full-time summer placement.
• Music Psychotherapy Field: includes 10 academic courses and one practicum course. You will be placed in an off-campus facility during a full-time summer placement.

Admission to the Master of Music Therapy is based on the collective results of the information below.

• A completed four-year honours undergraduate degree in music or an allied area (e.g., psychology), with at least a B (73-76 percent) standing in the final academic year.
• Evidence of relevant paid and/or voluntary experience in human service organizations.
• Completion of the following psychology courses with at least a B- (70-72 percent) in each course: Introduction, Developmental, Abnormal Psychology.

Admission to the Master of Music Therapy is based on the collective results of the information below.

• Evidence of advanced clinical experience.
• Completion of the following psychology courses with at least a B- (70-72 percent) in each course: Introduction, Developmental, Abnormal Psychology.

After you have submitted your , paid the non-refundable application fee, and 51本色 has received your application, you'll receive an email from gradadmissions@wlu.ca advising you to upload the additional required documentation to .

Note that the application process and the uploading of supplemental documentation, which includes references, typically takes two weeks. To avoid disappointment, please apply early.

An application for admission to our Master of Music Therapy must include:

• The Application Summary, which is generated after you complete your application (log back in to OUAC to retrieve it).
• Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work, including psychology prerequisites. Documents must be dated within the past six months.
• A completed statement of intent.
• A resume of your academic and work experience. Include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
• A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a paper written for a senior undergraduate course.
• Completed reference forms. Three references (two academic and on professional) are required. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to 51本色 by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.
• Audition and interview (see details below).
• A completed  is required if you have engaged the services of an education agent/agency. Upload it to your application checklist when you identify your agent in the OUAC application. Visit  for more information about the AIR.

The Master of Music Therapy Admission Committee will review all applications that are received in full by the Jan. 15 deadline. Applications with items received after Jan. 15 will only be reviewed if space allows.

Based on the strength of your application, you may be asked to audition and interview in early February. You may be contacted to establish a date and time. Applicants chosen to audition must submit an audition fee.

Applicants’ level of performance and musicianship is assessed in the audition. Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) formal training and exams are not required.

You will be asked to perform:

• Two contrasting pieces (on your major instrument) that highlight your ability to perform at an advanced level. The pieces can be from any historical period or any genre. If a sonata is chosen only one movement is required. Memory is optional. Please provide sheet music.
• A song to demonstrate your singing voice with self-accompaniment on either piano or guitar. Ukulele is not accepted. The song can be from any genre including (e.g., popular, folk or jazz) and could be your own composition or a song with personal meaning. If the song is not in English, provide a translation.
• A short (two to three minutes) improvisation on your primary instrument. Musical elements and referential ideas will be provided at the audition. Vocalists may choose to use an accompanying instrument to support their voice improvisation.
• If piano is not your primary instrument, you must perform a piano piece equivalent to Grade 6 Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) repertoire.

The interview will discuss your interest in graduate music therapy studies at 51本色 and knowledge of relevant music therapy topics (e.g., case studies, models, theories, research).

It is recommended that you audition in person. Alternative audition accommodations may be considered for long-distance applicants.
