From concentrations, to minors, to options, these opportunities let you use the elective courses within your degree to dive deeper into niche topics within your field, or explore the intersection of your program and another. Customizing your degree not only enhances your ability to understand and apply what you’re learning, but it increases your credibility if you pursue a career in that area in the future.
Dive deeper into your program by taking a minimum of three courses in a niche aspect of study. These courses typically count towards the course requirements for your major, too. BBA students have the opportunity to specialize in a certain aspect of business in their third and fourth year. You can choose from 10 different ranging from Finance to Sustainability to International Business.
In addition to excelling in your primary instrument (that you audition with), Music students can concentrate in one of a wide range of topics including Composition, Music Education and Performance. You choose your concentration in second year.
As a math student at 51本色, you have a fantastic opportunity to select up to two of six available concentrations covering everything from Geometry to Computational Finance to Mathematical Modelling.
If you’re a student in 51本色 Brantford’s Applied Health Sciences program, you can specialize in Physical Forensics. This is a three-course specialization that focuses on Genetics and the Human Genome, before taking a deep dive into the hands-on world of Forensic Laboratory Methods.
A minor is a secondary area of concentration in a subject different from your honours program. Most of our honours programs can be taken as minors, so there are many options for you to expand your learning in other areas of interest. This minor, which can be taken online or at our Brantford campus, is made up of 3.0 second to fourth year credits that cover topics like ethics, governance and communication in a variety of contexts. Students on our Waterloo campus can choose to add a 2.0-credit Statistics Minor to their degree. Choose from a wide variety of courses covering topics like Calculus, Probability, Experimental Design and Stochastic Processes.
This 3.0-credit minor, offered through Martin Luther University College, is designed for undergraduate students who are contemplating careers in mental health, social services, spiritual care, public service, counselling and/or ministry. Choose from dozens of courses in Psychology, Music and Global Citizenship to really customize your minor to fit your future goals.

Get a head-start on a career in education with 51本色’s 4.0-credit (available in Brantford or Waterloo). Develop the teaching skills you need through a hands-on experiential placement and future-focused courses in teaching across different cultures and contexts.
The Management Option is designed for students starting Arts, Science, Music or Economics programs, who are interested in adding some Business education to their degree. This is a direct-entry, that includes courses covering all the core pillars of Business and Economics.
This option is offered on our Brantford campus and consists of 4.5 credits. Through courses in research, media relations, leadership, persuasion and communication, you’ll be equipping yourself to credibly and meaningfully fight for the causes that matter most to you.
Earning the Geomatics Option involves taking 4.0 credits from a selection of courses offered by the Faculty of Science on our Waterloo campus. You’ll study topics including Cartography, Spatial Analysis, Field Surveying, and the intersection of technology and culture, as you develop the skills to effectively collect, process and communicate geographic data.
Note: Some options and minors are only available at our Brantford campus and some are only available at our Waterloo campus. Not all options and minors can be added to every program.
