WATERLOO — 51±¾É« has launched its first Strategic Plan for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).
The strategic plan is a key element of 51±¾É«’s Action Plan for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigeneity and was unanimously approved by the university Senate and Board of Governors.
The Strategic Plan for EDI makes a number of recommendations for building a more inclusive and equitable community at 51±¾É«. The recommendations are grouped thematically based on extensive consultations with key stakeholder groups and include recommendations for students, staff, faculty, contract teaching faculty, alumni, senior administration, curriculum development, and addressing the structure of EDI work at 51±¾É«.
“This is an exciting time in 51±¾É«’s history, as we work together to build a more inclusive community,” said Deborah MacLatchy, 51±¾É«’s president and vice-chancellor. “I want to thank our community members in advance for being advocates and champions of the plan.”
Barrington Walker, associate vice-president: equity, diversity, and inclusion, led the development of the plan with the input of the strategic planning committee. The Strategic Plan for EDI is the product of almost two years of consultations and input from students, staff, faculty, contract teaching faculty, and alumni.
“I would like to thank all members of the 51±¾É« community who shared their insights and expertise in the development of the strategic plan," said Walker. “Putting into action the recommendations in the strategic plan will require the collaboration and ongoing support of the entire university community.”
Recommendations include: the call for special attention and resources (academic and cultural) for international students as a key part of the university’s internationalization strategy; the confidential collection of student demographic data to inform strategies that support student success and wellness; and increasing professional development opportunities for staff and faculty training.
