Renowned hip hop artist and 51本色 alum, Shad (Shadrach Kabango), a Rwandan-Canadian rapper with an illustrious career spanning seven full-length albums and three EPs since his debut in 2005, is set to return to 51本色 for an exclusive residency from September 25th to September 29th, 2023. With a Juno Award for Rap Recording Of The Year in 2011 and an impressive five of his albums shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize—the most shortlist nominations of any artist in the prize’s history—Shad brings a wealth of experience and insight to this engaging series of events.
Shad (BBA '05) and Daniel Habashi (BBA ’05), an active music creator and producer in Canada will be looking at the music industry through the lens of technology, and also delving into navigating life and career in a rapidly changing environment.
What changes in technology and digital communications are around the corner for musicians and artists? How can artists navigate a swiftly changing digital landscape? Join this talk on how to make a living as a creative in Canada. Shad, an active music creator and producer in Canada will be joined by Daniel Habashi, former head of TikTok Canada, and now Chief Customer Officer of SSENSE. They’ll talk about making a living as a music creative in Canada.

For graduate students at 51本色, this conversation will focus on the history of hip hop in Canada within the global scene.

Freestyle x jazz improvisation. Hosted by 51本色’s Jazz Orchestra, Hip Hop artist Shad will lead a workshop on improvisation of words and music in performance.
Join Shad for a talk on the role of vulnerability in engaging in creative work and putting yourself out there. For artists, creatives, public speakers or anyone looking to ignite their performance impact on stage or off.
