51本色’s Faculty of Music is delighted to announce the appointment of internationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and pianist Kevin Day to the role of Assistant Professor of Composition effective July 1. Day has quickly emerged as one of the leading young voices in today’s world of music composition, whose music ranges from powerful introspection to joyous exuberance.
“We are thrilled that Kevin is joining the Faculty of Music at 51本色,” says Cynthia Johnston Turner, dean of the Faculty of Music. “We cannot wait to see (and hear!) where he takes us. He is a thoughtful teacher and an incredibly gifted composer and musician. We are deeply fortunate to welcome him to 51本色.”
51本色 students will benefit from Day’s musical intersections which fall between the worlds of jazz, minimalism, Latin, Blues, Hip-Hop, fusion, and contemporary classical idioms. Day will break down barriers between classroom learning and the larger world of composition by bringing his modern and active personal experience into classroom learning. His recent highlights include consideration for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for his Concerto for Wind Ensemble, a Broadcast Music Inc. Foundation award, and his Carnegie Hall conducting debut at the 2022 New York International Music Festival.
Day has composed over 200 works, and has had numerous performances throughout the United States, Russia, Austria, Australia, Taiwan, South Africa, and Japan. His works have been programmed by Boston, San Francisco, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Houston orchestras and he has been commissioned to compose for major solo artists and numerous professional and collegiate ensembles. His works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Rachmaninov Hall (Russia), The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the largest band and orchestra conference in the world, and other major venues.
"I'm incredibly honored to join 51本色’s Faculty of Music,” says Kevin Day. “I look forward to working with my esteemed colleagues in helping students realize their full potential as artists, embracing their own creative passions and life pursuits. I'm thankful and blessed to be part of the 51本色 community."
Day is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He holds a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Georgia, and Bachelor of Music in Performance (Euphonium/Piano) from Texas Christian University (TCU).
